Background: In December of 2019, SARS-CoV-2, a new type of coronavirus, appeared, and it turned into an international epidemic. The consequences of the pandemic, especially the isolation measures, fear of infection and bad economic trends, as a result of the crisis, threaten people's basic psychological needs. Objective: The objective of this research was to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and perceived social support of persons with disabilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Methods: The research included a total sample of 232 respondents with different types of disabilities. The Symptom Checklist (SCL-90) was used to verify the research objective, which assessed three dimensions: somatization, depression and anxiety. Also, in order to verify the research objective, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support was applied, which consists of 12 statements that measure the perceived social support of family, friends and other people. The research data was processed with descriptive and inferential statistics. The basic statistical parameters were calculated, while the t-test was used for an independent sample of respondents to verify the set objective. Results: The results of the research showed that persons with disabilities, who were infected with the SARS-Cov-2 virus, had a significantly higher level of somatization, anxiety and depression compared to those who were not infected with the virus. The results in relation to social support did not prove to be statistically significant. Conclusion: The obtained results lead to the conclusion that, in the future, interventions by experts of various profiles must be planned to preserve the mental health of persons with disabilities, which is why it is important to invest in the emotional, psychological, social, physical and spiritual well-being of the individual.

Purpose A quantitative observational study was conducted. The purpose of this study is to examine the continuing adherence to the stopping over-medication of people with intellectual disability and/or autism guidelines for a cohort of outpatients seen in the outpatients’ clinics in the two teams who participated in this study to review the trend of psychotropic prescribing with a prescription indication along with the utilisation of non-pharmacological interventions. Design/methodology/approach Data was retrospectively collected over a period of one year for patients sampled conveniently in the outpatient’s clinic. The data was collected from two sites from psychiatric letters to the general practitioners (GPs), with the focus being psychotropic prescription indication and their adherence to British National Formulary limits, inclusion of a wider multi-disciplinary team or MDT (including nurses, psychologists and health support workers), use of Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scale for assessing medication side effects and response to treatment. Findings Most of the patients had at least one review in the previous six months. Antipsychotics were the highest prescribed medications without an indication for their use (13.3%) followed by anxiolytics and other medications. CGI recording was suboptimal, with 26% of the patient population did not have medication side effects and effectiveness monitored through this method. In total, 41% of patients were open to community nurses followed by other disciplines. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is an original article following the pilot study completed by the authors.

Viele Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung (MmgB) waren wesentlich stärker von COVID-19 betroffen als der Bevölkerungsdurchschnitt. Aufgrund ihrer Wohn- und Betreuungsformen sowie behinderungsassoziierter Gesundheitsfaktoren (wie etwa beim Down-Syndrom) war die Morbidität in dieser Bevölkerungsgruppe deutlich erhöht. Dies führte u. a. zu einer höheren Inzidenz in stationären Einrichtungen, einer höheren Sterblichkeit bei hospitalisierten Erkrankten und einer höheren Fallsterblichkeit bei bestimmten Subgruppen. Risikofaktoren waren Co-Erkrankungen wie Dysphagie, Epilepsie oder psychische Störungen. Hinzu kamen gesundheitliche Folgen durch einschränkende Maßnahmen der Expositionsprophylaxe zu Beginn der COVID-19-Pandemie. Dieser Übersichtsartikel beschreibt die wesentlichen Entwicklungen in der Versorgung von MmgB seit Pandemiebeginn. Neue bzw. eine Verstärkung bereits vorhandener psychischer Probleme traten häufiger bei ambulant oder von Angehörigen betreuten MmgB auf. MmgB in stationären Wohneinrichtungen waren seltener betroffen. Gründe für psychische Probleme waren v. a. fehlende soziale Kontakte, weggefallene Arbeits- und Beschäftigungsmöglichkeiten, die Angst machende Pandemiesituation sowie die großen strukturellen und personellen Veränderungen in den Einrichtungen zu Beginn der Pandemie. Während der Pandemie gab es zudem Probleme bei der Umsetzung therapeutischer und präventiver Maßnahmen. Dagegen wirkte sich vor allem im stationären Bereich die mit den Einschränkungen verbundene „Entschleunigung des Lebens“ zu Pandemiebeginn bei einem Teil der MmgB auch stressreduzierend aus und wurde von ihnen als etwas Positives empfunden. Betreuungskräfte hatten mehr Zeit für die eigentliche (= pädagogische) Arbeit. Insgesamt zeigte sich, dass gesundheitsfördernde Maßnahmen auch während der Pandemie die große Heterogenität der MmgB und ihrer Lebensbedingungen berücksichtigen müssen.
