Impact of the Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner role on acute hospital length of stay and cost‐savings for patients with hip fracture: A retrospective cohort study

Abstract: Implementation of the Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner role for care of hip fracture patients can reduce acute hospital length of stay resulting in important cost-savings.

“…In the orthopaedic context, APN can play an important role in the coordination of patient care to ensure the delivery of high‐quality evidence‐based care for patients with hip fractures. Such care can involve performing a thorough health assessment that reveals prior fall history and previous functional ability, requesting diagnostic interventions, prescribing medication, planning management for current care and beginning discharge planning (Coventry et al, ; Pickles, Coventry, Glennon, & Twigg, ).
