Impact of Trust on Local Residents’ Mega-Event Perceptions and Their Support

Abstract: This study examines the influence of residents' trust in government and organizing committee on their impact perceptions and support for a mega-event, namely 2014 FIFA World Cup. Findings suggest significant relationships between impact perceptions and support. While trust in government is found to be a significant determinant of impact perceptions, findings indicate no significant relationship between trust in government and support, which suggest that the relationship is mediated by impact perceptions. While… Show more

“…This psychological response includes positive expectations, for example, regarding ability, reliability, and goodwill (Dyer & Chu, 2003;Rotter, 2010). Trust often results in a reduction in rational judgment (Gursoy, Yolal, Ribeiro, & Panosso Netto, 2017;Siegrist & Cvetkovich, 2010). Based on behavioral economics, Coleman (1990) suggests that trust is an act of a trustor voluntarily handing over resources to a trustee without any promise from the trustee.…”

“…Taking a new perspective, a different approach [61] to the evaluation of the perceptions (in this case of the tourists) is presented as a way of analyzing the spontaneous annotations of the observed. Literature has already analyzed the perceptions of residents with respect to major events [62][63][64][65][66][67]. A model based on social exchange theory [68] explains the existence of a cause-effect relationship attributable to the cost-benefit dichotomy that can decisively influence the residents' thinking or perception of the event.…”

“…As we have seen in numerous scientific contributions that focus on major events [62][63][64][65][66][67]69], the residents' perspective must be taken into account. The present study finds some affinities to the study by Schnitzer et al [73] where the residents were concentrated within a young age range and which took a specific look at the Olympic Games.…”

“…[13]. Because of positive impacts of sport events, an increasing number of communities are planning to develop sport events or compete fiercely to host these events [11]. Researchers have not paid much attention to impacts of type of events where they recur annually with active residents' participation as competitors [5].…”

“…It is expected that tourism and travel will increase by 5% each year by 2020; the forecast for sports tourism is estimated at 10% per year [14]. Gursoy et al (2011) assert that mega-events are part of global sport tourism, and it is not surprising that they are being pursued by emerging nations that are seeking heightened visibility and profile within the context of globalisation [10][11]. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (2017) tourism is one of the largest economic sectors globally, with tourism associated with sport-related travel presenting major opportunities for mature as well as emerging destination [18].…”
