Impact of Viral Hepatitis on Apo- and Lipoprotein Status in Blood

Abstract: Objectives:To investigate the effect of viral hepatitis on serum levels of apo- and lipoproteins in different forms of liver diseases. Materials and Methods: One hundred and thirty adult patients and 100 healthy age- and gender-matched control individuals participated in this study. Patients were grouped according to four types of liver disease: acute viral hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis (CAH), cirrhosis of the liver and fulminant hepatic failure. Results: Hepatitis B virus, C virus and E virus (HEV) infe… Show more

“…Our findings confirmed previous studies [7,8,10,16,17] that revealed an alteration of lipid metabolism in advanced stages of viral liver cirrhosis principally because hepatocyte alteration was already profound. Patients were preselected in advanced disease stages, thus hepatocyte alteration was already profound.…”

“…This relationship was further demonstrated by recent basic and clinical research aimed at uncovering the mechanisms behind these alterations [7,10,13,15]. While the interference from viral infection is clearly established, only a limited number of studies further details how liver cirrhosis, especially in advanced stages, alters lipid metabolism.…”

“…Several studies have shown that lower serum total cholesterol (TC) level correlated with cancer recurrence in HCC patients with hepatic resection, revealing the possibility to predict surgical outcome by preoperative clinical physiological parameters. Poorer surgical outcome in HCC patients with lower preoperative serum TC level might be caused by long-term liver dysfunction and malnutrition, implying the potential role of lipid composition in determination of operative outcomes in HCC patients (Irshad et al, 2007; Wang et al, 2014; Lee et al, 2016; Zhang et al, 2017). Recent studies have reported that serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is in relation to incident cancers especially breast cancer.…”

“…The cause of these extrahepatic manifestations is generally believed to be immune mediated. Polyarteritis nodosa, HBV-associated glomerulonephritis, arthritis, and dermatitis are some known systemic complications of chronic HBV infection [1,2]. In recent years, progress has been achieved in the treatment of HBV [3].…”
