Impacts on the Groundwater Quality Within a Cemetery Area in Southeast Brazil

Abstract: This article presents the results of a case study carried out in the cemetery of Tabuleiro, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, from August 2007 to March 2008. Five sampling wells were drilled within the cemetery area, and water samples analyzed for pH, conductivity, nitrogen ammoniacal nitrogen, nitrate, total phosphorus, sodium, potassium, calcium, manganese, BOD, COD, total coliforms and E. coli. The results demonstrated that the groundwater is subjected to contamination from burials leakage and the most evident… Show more

“…Porosity is closely related to permeability, high porosity in sand grains will lead to high permeability, hence the permeability result ranges between 0.027 and 0.432 cm/s ( Table 5 ). Such a high permeability rate aligns with the initial works of Fineza et al. (2014) , and is not suitable for the safe sitting of a cemetery because of the immediate environment.…”

“…But most of the groundwater wells were above the limit and the highest mean values were observed in groundwater wells in Thimbirigasyaya (2), Moratuwa (5), and Kesbewa (9) DSDs. The reasons might be due to high urban runoff and sewage seepage from built-up areas (Fineza et al, 2014). Sewage and industrial contamination were detected through BOD and COD values.…”
