Impatiens tanintharyiensis (Balsaminaceae), a new species from Southern Myanmar

Abstract: Impatiens tanintharyiensis Ruchisansakun, Suksathan & Saw-Lwin from the Tanintharyi region of Southern Myanmar is described and illustrated as a new species. The presence of connate lateral united petals and a four-locular ovary, as well as results of molecular phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ITS and plastid atpB-rbcL spacer DNA sequences, suggest that the new species is a member of Impatiens section Semeiocardium (Zoll.) S.X. Yu & Wei Wang. The new species is morphologically most similar to I. spectabilis Tr… Show more

“…Sequences were added to the matrix and manually aligned. Bayesian phylogenetic analyses were conducted in accordance with the protocols provided in Ruchisansakun et al (2017). Bayesian analysis of the combined dataset was run for 10,000,000 generations, starting from different random trees and sampled every 500 generations.…”

“…However, these studies greatly underestimated biodiversity of Myanmar. More recently, many new species (Murata et al., 2010, Ormerod and Wood, 2010, Tanaka et al., 2010a, Tanaka et al., 2010b, Tanaka et al., 2010c, Tanaka et al., 2011, Tanaka et al., 2015b, Tanaka et al., 2016, Yukawa et al., 2010, Kress et al., 2010, Tanaka and Hayami, 2011, Schaefer et al., 2012, Gowda et al., 2012, Tong and Xia, 2014, Peng et al., 2014, Pradheep et al., 2014, Tan et al., 2015, Tan et al., 2017, Tan et al., 2018, Tanaka and Peng, 2016, Sangnark et al., 2016, Cho et al., 2016a, Phutthai and Hughes, 2017, Liu et al., 2017, Liu et al., 2018, Aung et al., 2017, Ruchisansakun et al., 2017, Zhou et al., 2017, Zhou et al., 2018, Yang et al., 2017a, Yang et al., 2017b, Yang et al., 2017c, Yang et al., 2018a, Yang et al., 2018b, Aung and Jin, 2018, Ding et al., 2018) and newly recorded species (Tanaka et al., 2006a, Tanaka et al., 2007, Tanaka et al., 2018, Ito et al., 2009, Ito et al., 2014, Nemoto et al., 2010, Kurzweil et al., 2010, Rodda and Simonsson, 2011, Kurzweil and Lwin, 2012a, Kurzweil and Lwin, 2012b, Kurzweil and Lwin, 2015, Ormerod, 2012, Nemoto and Murata, 2013, Wang and Xia, 2013, Paszko, 2014, Watthana et al., 2015, Aung et al., 2015a, Aung et al., 2015b, Mood et al., 2016, Ibaragi et al., 2017, Kang et al., 2017, Kang et al., 2018) have been recorded in Myanmar.…”

“…Balsaminaceae consists of Hydrocera Blume ex Wight & Arnott (1834: 140) with only a single species, H.triflora (L.) Wight & Arnott (1834: 140), and Impatiens L. (1753: 937), comprising over 1,000 species (Ruchisansakun et al 2018). In Southeast Asia, many new Impatiens species were recently described (Souvannakhoummane and Suksathan 2015; Ruchisansakun et al 2017; Ruchisansakun et al 2018; Suksathan and Triboun 2009).…”
