Implant therapy: 40 years of experience

Abstract: Implant placement has become a well-established and highly successful therapy in the rehabilitation of partially and fully edentulous patients. The 'original' treatment protocol, which aimed to demonstrate implant 'biocompatibility' and the achievement of osseointegration, has evolved over the past 40 years into a broader treatment approach in which the esthetic and patient-related objectives have become the main focus. This volume of Periodontology 2000 summarizes, via narrative reviews, the advantages and di… Show more

“…The increase in the number of implants placed per year is of course an important factor. Another possible explanation for the reported increase in periimplantitis cases may be related to a change in the clinical protocol for the placement of oral implants over the past 40 years (Quirynen et al 2014). The initial very strict "biocompatibility" protocol with long-term success as ultimate goal has developed toward a less strict protocol focusing on "speed" and "esthetics".…”

“…Good biocompatibility and rapid osseointegration are essential elements of implant success and stability (Goriainov et al, 2014, Plecko et al, 2012, Quirynen et al, 2014, Von et al, 2014). In this study, we investigated whether low doses of BPs enhanced proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs on Ti surfaces.…”

“…Tripodal positioning of three implants has recently been seen as an alternative application for mandibular overdentures, 76 coupled with renewed emphasis on the simplicity of the overdenture approach after 40 years of implant experience. 77 Bearing this in mind, additional randomized controlled trials also registered on an international public access database registry are encouraged to validate this surgical approach. 78…”
