Implementation of region based medical image compression for telemedicine application

Abstract: There is an increasing demand for transmitting medical images for telemedicine application. These medical images are rich in radiological information and the file sizes associated with it are also large. Medical images such as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) produce human body pictures in digital form and they produce excessive amount of data. So compression is necessary for storage and transmission purpose. Image compression enhances the performance of any digital system by reducing the time and cost with or… Show more

“…Generally, the ROI segment implements the lossless algorithm and non-ROI compressed using the lossy algorithm. The selection of techniques and algorithms for compress image depends on the objective of the research conducted by the appropriate researcher [22]. Then the resulting compression image for both ROI and non-ROI is reconstructed.…”

“…The compression method's performance suggested showing an improvement in the compression rate between 10% and 25% compared to standard image compression techniques used in the medical industry. P. Eben Sophia and J. Anitha have to propose the compression technique of MRI images with utilised ROI based compression, which increases the compression ratio compared to the block-based method [22]. They are locating ROI with split and merge technique and ROI mask generation.…”

“…The algorithm used the region growing method to separate ROI and BG in an image, and then used the proposed CVQ scheme to compress the two parts separately. In the algorithm proposed by Sophia and Anitha [5], the ROI part of an image is losslessly compressed by run-length coding, Huffman coding or arithmetic coding, and the BG part is subjected to lossy compression based on vector quantization.…”

“…Sophia P. and Anitha J. have considered the region of interest of the physician in compressing of MR images [5]. ROI has been compressed by lossless approach, while the Non-ROI is compressed as lossy.…”
