Implementing an Integrated Pharmaceutical Management Information System for Antiretrovirals and Other Medicines: Lessons From Namibia

Abstract: Integrating patient and commodity data into one system while maintaining specialized functionality has allowed managers to monitor and mitigate stock-out risks more effectively, as well as provide earlier warning for HIV drug resistance.

“…In Mozambique, a robust electronic patient management system facilitated a facility-level reporting of required indicators, improved ability to identify patients lost to follow-up; and support facility and patient management for HIV care [19]. An implementation study aimed at implementing an integrated pharmaceutical management information system for antiretroviral treatment (ART) and other medicines in Namibia showed the system's reliability in managing ART patients, monitoring ART adherence and HIV drug resistance early warning indicators [20].…”

“…Strengthening of supply chain of Antiretroviral therapy (ARVs) is very crucial in order to make essential medicines available. 1 In Namibia, several efforts have been done to strengthen supply chain of ARVs, including strengthening Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) programs, but sporadic shortage has been reported. 1 , 2 The situation may be caused by the absence of a clear picture of aggregation of consumption figures of Nevirapine (NVP) syrup in medical stores and within health facilities, which has not been given much attention.…”

This study has examined the supply-chain system in Oshana region and has developed an optimal mathematical supply-chain model, which is needed to ensure achievement of optimal conditions to prevent stock-outs of NVP syrup.…”

“…ADRs are a major cause of hospital admissions and treatment interruptions; it was estimated that approximately 6.5% of hospital admissions were due to ADRs in the United Kingdom . As sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA) is worst hit by the HIV epidemic, it is important that systems are in place to monitor new and ongoing antiretroviral therapies (ART) . As newer medicines are increasingly integrated into standard treatment guidelines for public health care in SSA, the strengthening of adverse drug reaction reporting becomes critical to improve quality of care …”
