Implications of Openness: A Study into (All) the Growing Literature on Open Innovation

Abstract: Seven years after Chesbrough published the first book on open innovation; the field has literally exploded, and is continuing to do so at an increasing speed. Earlier overviews have analyzed the current status of the field at different points in time. The purpose with this paper is to take this research one step further and analyze gaps in the field as it has progressed up to date, and also discuss the managerial implications of that literature. All scientific literature (as found through major databases) publ… Show more

“…The concept of open innovation (Chesbrough, 2003) has recently gained widespread research attention (e.g., Enkel et al, 2009;Giannopoulou et al, 2010;Groen and Linton, 2010;Huizingh, 2011). Earlier open innovation research focused on inbound processes, whereas outbound processes have received less attention (Mortara and Minshall, 2011).…”

“…Value creation may occur, for example, through the generation of open standards (SIMCOE, 2006), in a cooperative fashion, removing emphasis of a patent as the sole mechanism of competitive advantage. According to Giannopoulou et al (2010), in this paradigm, it has become evident that, where collaborations are established, IP has begun to be proactively shared, although such assets may still be used in a defensive way by some companies.…”

“…Although IP issues are crucial for open innovation, there is a lack of effective IP management practices in the literature. This is a topic that requires more attention as it is one of the major barriers to open innovation (GIANNOPOULOU et al, 2010), especially in a context of collaboration between different kinds of organizations.…”

“…IOI, crowdsourcing and BS are expected to accelerate innovation processes and reduce the cost for generating new products, technologies and processes (Verona et al 2006;Terwiesch and Xu, 2008;Giannopoulou, 2010;Volpentesta and Ammirato, 2013) and also to reduce risk involved in developing new technologies . Solvers in BS are often expert and talented individuals that work outside the boundaries of the organization that formulated the challenge.…”

“…Some companies implemented proprietary systems to manage BS (Huston and Sakkab, 2006). Besides several intermediary organizations like Innocentive or Atizo (Lichtenthaler and Ernst, 2008;Jeppesen and Lakhani, 2010;Giannopoulou, 2010;Frey et al 2011) provide services to support BSs through their websites.…”
