This paper presents a bibliometric analysis of the Theory of Constraints (TOC) research i.e. a total of 1009 journal articles published since 1984. From a bibliometric point of view, the state of the art was mapped and research gaps in the scientific literature identified, creating opportunities for future research. The Production area leads in number of publications, and applications in the Process of Ongoing Improvement in general have been receiving less attention from academics. It is also worth noting that the International Journal of Production Research has the highest concentration of published works on TOC. The results show that TOC is in continuous development with a trend of growth and therefore demands additional inquiry. The main contributions of this work are: (a) presenting a comprehensive historical review and bibliometric analysis on TOC in a manner not yet illustrated in the literature; (b) addressing potential implications and directions for the IJPR community on TOC research; and (c) offering avenues for future research on how to advance the extant literature of TOC.

Abstract. Delays and disruptions are extremely challenging issues to deal with in project management. In this article, a novel optimization approach to the bu er sizing method is introduced aimed at maximizing the robustness of the bu ered schedule generated. The measures a ecting the bu er sizing include network complexity, exibility, criticality, and robustness. The methodology presented is based on the critical chain project management concept, yet novel metrics are introduced to cover the uncertainties connected with the critical and non-critical chains. The overall purpose of the approach is to investigate the necessity and design of a decision support system to improve the process of critical chain project management. Utilizing a robust and exible framework, this study tries to e ciently determine the size of feeding and project bu ers. The weaknesses of the current critical chain project management approaches were overcome in the critical chain project management, and a new method was developed based on the integration of simulation and optimization techniques. In order to verify the e ciency of the method proposed, a case study is conducted. The outcomes indicate that the robust bu er allocation method proposed yields more stable project schedules, as against the traditional bu er sizing methods.

Construction duration and schedule robustness are of great importance to ensure efficient construction. However, the current literature has neglected the importance of schedule robustness. Relatively little attention has been paid to schedule robustness via deviation of an activity’s starting time, which does not consider schedule robustness via structural deviation caused by the logical relationships among activities. This leads to a possibility of deviation between the planned schedule and the actual situation. Thus, an optimization model of construction duration and schedule robustness is proposed to solve this problem. Firstly, duration and two robustness criteria including starting time deviation and structural deviation were selected as the optimization objectives. Secondly, critical chain method and starting time criticality (STC) method were adopted to allocate buffers to the schedule in order to generate alternative schedules for optimization. Thirdly, hybrid grey wolf optimizer with sine cosine algorithm (HGWOSCA) was proposed to solve the optimization model. The movement directions and speed of grey wolf optimizer (GWO) was improved by sine cosine algorithm (SCA) so that the algorithm’s performance of convergence, diversity, accuracy, and distribution improved. Finally, an underground power station in China was used for a case study, by which the applicability and advantages of the proposed model were proved.
