Improved Cross-Polarization Performance of a Multi-Phase-Center Parabolic Reflector Antenna

Abstract: This letter addresses the cross-polarization properties of electronically controlled multi-phase-center parabolic reflector antennas, illuminated by over-moded primary feeds. Due to the presence of the higher-order modes in the primary feed, the secondary cross-polarization levels deteriorate in the case of symmetric reflector antennas. As for the offset reflectors, the primary multimode feed required to displace the phase-center location may produce a significant crosstalk in the orthogonal polarization. It i… Show more

“…However, the asymmetry of reflector structure itself leads to the deterioration of cross-polarization (XP) and the value is generally about −25 dB, 4,5 which does not meet the high requirement in some special system. To improve the XP performance, the common scheme is (1) increasing the focal length to weaken the effect of the asymmetry on the XP performance 6,7 ; (2) reshaping the surface of the reflector to change the amplitude and phase distribution of surface field, then to improve the XP performance 8,9 ; (3) redesigning the feed to let it operate at the multimode state to improve the XP performance [10][11][12] ; (4) using dualreflector to suppress the XP performance. 13 However, increasing the focal length will be limited by the satellite structure, and the improvement effect is extremely limited.…”

“…These antennas are then desired to have stable high-gain performance, which enables them to effectively receive signals that are extremely weak due to high path loss. The preferred solution satisfying these requirements is a large-aperture reflector antenna with a feeder at the focal position [6], [7]. In such a reflector antenna, the The associate editor coordinating the review of this manuscript and approving it for publication was Pavlos I. Lazaridis .…”
