“…Japanese high volume centers in which combined caudate lobe resection is routinely performed report relatively high curative resection rate (59-87%) and 5 year survival rate (33-44%) [74,87,124,127,[142][143][144][145][146][147][148]. Several reports from other countries also showed the benefits of this procedure for hilar/upper bile duct carcinoma [149][150][151][152][153][154]. These results indicate that combined caudate lobe resection should be performed in most cases of hilar or upper bile duct carcinoma for increasing curative resection rate and better prognosis.…”

“…Major hepatectomy with systematic nodal dissection is associated with a good chance of prolonged survival in patients with carcinoma involving the hepatic hilus, including those with advanced disease [47,48] . Extended hemihepatectomy, with or without pancreatoduodenectomy, plus extrahepatic bile duct resection and regional lymphadenectomy has recently been recognized as the standard curative treatment for hilar bile duct cancer.…”

“…In a recent publication by Liu et al [42], a group of 142 patients is described with hilar cholangiocarcinoma in the period 1989–2004. For comparison of outcome, patients were divided between two groups: period 1, 1989–1998, and period 2, 1999–2004.…”
