Improved Rapid Visual Earthquake Hazard Safety Evaluation of Existing Buildings Using a Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Model

Abstract: Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) is a procedure that estimates structural scores for buildings and prioritizes their retrofit and upgrade requirements. Despite the speed and simplicity of RVS, many of the collected parameters are non-commensurable and include subjectivity due to visual observations. This might cause uncertainties in the evaluation, which emphasizes the use of a fuzzy-based method. This study aims to propose a novel RVS methodology based on the interval type-2 fuzzy logic system (IT2FLS) to set the… Show more

“…An SPI value that exceeds 20 shall be categorized as High priority building. Moreover, some new rapid seismic hazard assessment methods have been carried out by implementing the machine learning techniques such as multilayer perceptron [25,26] and support vector machine [27] or used soft computing techniques such as type-2 fuzzy logic [28]. However, some of the proposed methods are data-dependent.…”

“…In [19], a discrete-time repetitive controller (RC) was proposed to improve the output current and to overcome the drawback of using a linear PI controller in the presence of non-linearities in the system components. Type-1 and Type-2 FLCs have been widely used in various applications and have achieved remarkable success in managing higher levels of uncertainty [20][21][22][23][24][25]. FLC applications also include intelligent control for marine applications, traction diesel engines, robotic control, internet bandwidth control, industrial system controllers, power management and electrical control, aircraft control evolutionary computing, and DC-DC converters.…”

“…Therefore, it has attracted the interest of many researchers to develop and improve innovative and accurate methods. As a result of this effort, there are some studies on different RVS methods [8,9] and many proposed new RVS by using linear regression [10][11][12], Multi-criteria decision-making [13], Fuzzy logic [14][15][16][17]. There are other methods for the probabilistic seismic vulnerability of buildings in urban areas [18], modification of the empirical method for seismic vulnerability according to an analysis of the actual seismic performance of buildings in the city of Lorca, Spain [19], damage and change detection techniques of buildings using very high-resolution optical satellite images [20], and seismic vulnerability assessment of school buildings built by industrialized building systems [21], which shows the variety of works in seismic vulnerability assessment of buildings.…”
