Improvement in Disability Mediates the Effect of Self-Efficacy on Pain Relief in Chronic Low Back Pain Patients with Exercise Therapy

Abstract: Background. The biopsychosocial mechanism by which exercise leads to improvement in chronic low back pain (CLBP) remains unstudied. This prospective cohort study was performed to examine the effectiveness of exercise on pain, disability, and psychological status for CLBP. We also tested path analytic models in which changes in these variables were included. Methods. CLBP patients who visited the Interdisciplinary Pain Center of Keio University Hospital from July 2018 to April 2020 were included. The propensity… Show more

“…Rolland Morris Disability Questionnaire and ODI scales are among the most recommended in the CLBP population (17,39). These results are in line with recent studies showing the relationship between reducing pain and disability (80). Flexibility (i.e., sit-and-reach test) showed a very large ES (ES = −2.44) and low heterogeneity ( I 2 = 23.7%) when compared with nonactive controls.…”

“…These apps offer an easily accessible alternative to self-dedicated and compliant patients with back pain, as they are comparable to standard treatment ( 25 ) . A prospective cohort study concluded that exercise improved disability and mediated the effect of increased self-efficacy on pain relief in patients with CLBP ( 26 ) .…”
