Improvement in drying performance through sample movement change in tumble dryers

Abstract: To improve the drying performance of a tumble dryer, the movement of sample clothes as a function of the mechanical action of the dryer was analyzed. The movement of cotton shirts inside a tumble dryer, represented by sample movement patterns, occupancy, and velocity distribution, were quantitatively analyzed using sample movement indices. The differences in the sample movement and the subsequent drying performance were evaluated by varying the drum rotational speed and direction. A drum rotational speed of 50… Show more

“…This study aims to design a program according to the drying sections by considering the effect of sample movement, which is changed by varying the hot air flow and drum rotations, on the drying performance. At the beginning of drying, only hot air flow was introduced without drum rotation; in the middle of drying, the drum rotation speed was changed to 50 rpm along with hot air flow, leading to the highest evaporation rate; and in the latter of drying, the drum rotation speed, which had improved the fabric properties, was changed to 57.5 rpm and the drum rotation direction was changed every 2 s. 14 Therefore, the drying period herein was more than that under the existing drying condition of 50 rpm; however, the energy consumption was within the error range; further, a 36.9% decrease in shrinkage and a 10.8% improvement in wrinkle recovery were obtained (Table 3).…”
