Improvement of plastic-based disposable bioreactors for plant science needs

Abstract: The present article describes two new applications of plastic-based cell culture systems in the plant biotechnology domain. Different types of bioreactors are used at Nestlé R&D Center-Tours for large scale culture of plants cells to produce metabolites or recombinant proteins and for mass propagation of selected plant varieties by somatic embryogenesis. Particularly, recent studies are directed to cut down the production costs of these two processes by developing disposable cell culture systems. For large sca… Show more

“…Long bullet‐shaped bubbles (also termed slug bubbles) which occupy nearly the entire cross‐section of a tube are generated and rise to the top of the culture bag. Oxygen transfer coefficients detected in the SBB were found to be comparable to values obtained in commercially stirred bioreactors for plant suspension cultures 13, 65. Therefore, similar growth and production for the cultivated BY‐2 suspension cells and soya suspension cells were expected.…”

“…A técnica de regeneração de plantas por embriogênese somática está bem estabelecida para o cafeeiro, e é possível produzir mudas clonais em larga escala com uso de biorreatores de imersão temporária (Afreen et al, 2002;Ducos et al, 2007Ducos et al, , 2008. Etienne-Barry et al (1999) demonstraram ser possível semear embriões germinados, produzidos em biorreatores de imersão temporária, diretamente no substrato utilizado para a produção de mudas.…”

“…In terms of cost, cheaper sources of culture vessels and power need to be explored. The "glass jar temporary immersion bioreactor" and the "horizontal disposable temporary immersion bioreactor" (''Box-in-Bag'') were developed for purposes of cost reduction for coffea cultivation (Ducos et al, 2008). With TIBs at the heart of yam seed systems, it will be necessary to standardize the protocols for different economically important genotypes.…”
