Improvement of Scratch and Wear Resistance of Polymers by Fillers Including Nanofillers

Abstract: Polymers have lower resistance to scratching and wear than metals. Liquid lubricants work well for metals but not for polymers nor for polymer-based composites (PBCs). We review approaches for improvement of tribological properties of polymers based on inclusion of fillers. The fillers can be metallic or ceramic—with obvious consequences for electrical resistivity of the composites. Distinctions between effectiveness of micro- versus nano-particles are analyzed. For example, aluminum nanoparticles as filler ar… Show more

“…Tribology is a very broad area that includes the studies of friction, lubrication, wear, adhesion, scratch resistance and any interactions of multiple surfaces [17,[19][20][21][22]. Dynamic friction is an important indicator, and has been determined by using a tribometer produced by Nanovea Inc.…”

“…Slike tipičnih otisaka dobijenih na testeru mikro tvrdoće poVikersu prikazane na slici 1 pokazuju da je veća vrednost mikrotvrdoće (manji otisak) dobijena kod sintetisanog uzorka sa Al2O3 Fe česticama kao ojačanjem. Poboljšana tvrdoća dobijenog kompozita obično je praćena povećanjem otpornosti na habanje, rezanje i grebanje koji povećavaju primenljivost kompozita [14][15][16].…”

“…The elastic modulus values of composites increased significantly at high filler contents (15, 20, 25 and 30 wt%) where the modulus increased 18, 16, 14 and 24%, respectively, compared with the neat HMPEX. Figure 1 (a) illustrates the effect exerted by Nb2O5 content on the elastic modulus of each composite: for low filler content, the addition of Nb2O5 reduces the matrix cohesion, while for high contents, the reinforcing effect of the filler predominates [25]. The increment of elastic modulus value represents an increment in the stiffness of the composite [39].…”

“…Development of composites is one of the methods used to improve the wear resistance of polymeric materials [18]. Different type of fillers such as alumina [23], graphite, molybdenum disulfide, [24]; carbon nanofibers and nanotubes [25,26] have been added to biopolymers.…”
