Improvement of Transdermal Delivery of Sumatriptan Succinate Using a Novel Self-dissolving Microneedle Array Fabricated from Sodium Hyaluronate in Rats

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to develop an alternative transdermal formulation containing sumatriptan succinate (SS) for the treatment of migraine. Novel self-dissolving SS-loaded microneedle arrays (MNs) were fabricated from sodium hyaluronate and their efficacy for transdermal delivery of SS was characterized. The resulting MNs maintained their skin piercing abilities for at least 30 min after being placed at a high relative humidity of 75%. Rapid release of SS from the MNs was also observed in vitro… Show more

“…5g ), owing to the crosslinking effect of mineralized particles, which reinforced the stability of the MN at the cost of reducing the extensibility of the polymer network 46 . Importantly, this range of failure force (≥16 N per array) 52 indicated sufficient MN stiffness and strength to facilitate skin penetration without deformation 53 . Moreover, after exposure to glucose solution, MNs maintained the original morphology and shape (Supplementary Fig.…”

“…These micron-sized needles disrupt the SC and create microscale pathways that can enhance TDD. However, the choosing of basal materials for microneedles is limited, and the needles may accidentally break so that they remain in the skin [ 26 ].…”
