Techniques for comparing and recommending conferences

This article defines, implements, and evaluates techniques to automatically compare and recommend conferences. The techniques for comparing conferences use familiar similarity measures and a new measure based on co-authorship communities, called co-authorship network community similarity index. The experiments reported in the article indicate that the technique based on the new measure performs better than the other techniques for comparing conferences, which is therefore the first contribution of the article. Then, the article focuses on three families of techniques for conference recommendation. The first family adopts collaborative filtering based on the conference similarity measures investigated in the first part of the article. The second family includes two techniques based on the idea of finding, for a given author, the strongest related authors in the co-authorship network and recommending the conferences that his co-authors usually publish in. The first member of this family is based on the Weighted Semantic Connectivity Score-WSCS, which is accurate but quite costly to compute for large co-authorship networks. The second member of this family is based on a new score, called the Modified Weighted Semantic Connectivity Score-MWSCS, which is much faster to compute and as accurate as the WSCS. The third family includes the Cluster-WSCS-based and the Cluster-MWSCS-based conference recommendation techniques, which adopt conference clusters generated using a subgraph of the co-authorship network. The experiments indicate as the best performing conference recommendation technique the Cluster-WSCS-based technique. This is the second contribution of the article. Finally, the article includes experiments that use data extracted from the DBLP repository and a webbased application that enables users to interactively analyze and compare a set of conferences.

This paper investigates the feasibility of maintaining a social information system to support attendees at an academic conference. The main challenge of this work was to create an infrastructure where users' social activities, such as bookmarking, tagging, and social linking could be used to enhance user navigation and maximize the users' ability to locate two important types of information in conference settings: presentations to attend and attendees to meet. We developed Conference Navigator 3, a social conference support system that integrates a conference schedule planner with a social linking service. We examined its potential and functions in the context of a mediumscale academic conference. In this paper, we present the design of the system's socially enabled features and report the results of a conference-based study. Our study demonstrates the feasibility of social information systems for supporting academic conferences. Despite the low number of potential users and the short timeframe in which conferences took place, the usage of the system was high enough to provide sufficient data for social mechanisms. The study shows that most critical social features were highly appreciated and used, and provides direction for further research. ARTICLE HISTORY

As a result of the imprecise positioning accuracy, the satellite-based positioning system cannot offer the reliable and continuous positioning service for vehicular active safety application or vehicle monitoring in urban center with dense buildings or underground. With the advent of Vehicle Ad hoc Network (VANET), the Roadside Unit (RSU) can be considered as an anchor or base station to offer positioning reference. The ground-based positioning solution can help us acquire more precise position information through many times interaction, but multiple communications will result in heavy burden for network and more energy consumption. In this paper, we firstly analyze the pros and cons of representative algorithm, i.e., Symmetric Double SideTwo way Ranging (SDS-TWR). Then, we propose a novel energy-saving One-Sided Synchronous Two-Way Ranging (OSS-TWR) algorithm to reduce the communication times, which gains lower energy consumption and better performance than SDS-TWR. The experiments verify the validity of our solution. Finally, we make a conclusion and discuss the future works of vehicular positioning.
