Improving the Empirical Credibility of Cinematherapy

Abstract: This study intends to improve the empirical credibility of cinematherapy by measuring its effect on the level of hopelessness experienced by an adult diagnosed with Major Depression. Using a singlesubject interrupted time-series design, themes of positivism were highlighted during a 5-week group showing of the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Data obtained during the treatment period were compared to 3-week baseline and posttreatment data (total of 11 weeks). Results suggest that a stru… Show more

“…In addition to the aforementioned publications that include PND, PEM, and PAND analyses Lenz et al, 2011;Lenz, Perepiczka, et al, 2012;Lenz, Speciale, et al, 2012;Schottelkorb & Ray, 2009), researchers interested in practicing the application of these methods are encouraged to conduct analyses using examples of counseling research in which the methods can be readily applied (see Heppner & Hendricks, 1995;Martin-Causey & Hinkle, 1995;Powell & Newgent, 2010). Although SCRDs may not be preferred for every research question, nonoverlap methods for computing treatment effect sizes provide a valuable tool for supporting accountability between practitioners, clients, funding sources, and community stakeholders.…”

“…As with any other statistical procedure, PND, PEM, and PAND should be implemented prudently after considering baseline data characteristics, the size of data sets, and the purpose for evaluating a phenomenon. In addition to the aforementioned publications that include PND, PEM, and PAND analyses (Lenz & Aguilar, 2012; Lenz et al, 2011; Lenz, Perepiczka, et al, 2012; Lenz, Speciale, et al, 2012; Schottelkorb & Ray, 2009), researchers interested in practicing the application of these methods are encouraged to conduct analyses using examples of counseling research in which the methods can be readily applied (see Heppner & Hendricks, 1995; Martin-Causey & Hinkle, 1995; Powell & Newgent, 2010). Although this article is practical in nature, researchers are encouraged to increase their familiarity with SCRDs and explore the many applications of this methodology that can support and advance the counseling profession.…”

“…Just as literature has been suggested as a possible vehicle for therapeutic intervention, so too has film. The practice of using 'motion pictures in a structured manner with specific populations for particular therapeutic gains' 96 dates back to at least the 1940s, 97 and continues today in a wide range of healthcare contexts. 98 To the extent that it is theorised, 'cinematherapy' is framed in much the same way as its literary equivalent, with many theorists even going so far as to explicitly identify it as a on form of bibliotherapy.…”
