Improving thermal stability of a resonator fiber optic gyro employing a polarizing resonator

Abstract: To improve the thermal stability of a resonator fiber optic gyro (R-FOG), a transmission-type polarizing resonator by inserting two in-line polarizers in a polarization-maintaining fiber resonator with twin 90° polarization-axis rotated splices is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The in-line polarizers attenuate the unwanted resonance by introducing high loss for the unwanted eigenstates of polarization in the resonator. The desired resonance in the resonator can keep excellent stability in a wide tem… Show more

“…To reduce the polarization-fluctuation induced errors, a transmitter OFRR by inserting two in-line polarizers in a polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) resonator with twin 90° polarization-axis rotated splices is adopted [11,12]. In the lock-in state, the central frequency of the laser tracks the resonant frequency of the CCW lightwave in the OFRR.…”

“…On the other hand, the north-finding algorithm affects the FOG north-finding precision and rapidity obviously, so the north-finding algorithm can be considered to be improved in order to better meet the practical requirements for the gyroscope north-finding system. Among the FOG north-finding algorithm, static north-finding is a traditional method and has been widely used, but the operation is complex, and north-finding precision is limited [7,8]. The FOG dynamic north-finding plan is a new inertial positioning method, which is being explored and taken much of the focus of researchers at home and abroad.…”

“…Two key nonreciprocal noises, the optical Kerr-induced drift [6,7] and temperature-driven polarization instability [8,9] have been regarded as the main barriers for the improvement of the performance of the RFOG. The optical Kerr effect is a nonlinear and power-dependent process in the sensing fiber of the RFOG.…”
