In Search of the Swedish Asians: Representations of Asians and Experiences of Being Asian in Contemporary Sweden as Reflected in the Non-White Swedish Literature

Abstract: Asians in Sweden make up over 200,000 inhabitants. However, compared to the Afro-Swedes, the Latin Americans or the minority inhabitants who have a background in the Middle East, the Swedish Asians are largely absent from the political, cultural and academic spheres in contemporary Sweden. This absence applies in both minority and migrant contexts as well as in connection with migration and integration issues. This article consists of a study of literary texts written by minority authors who themselves are not… Show more

“…Moreover, the dichotomized categories based on migration background are racialized as a reference to White and non-White Swedes (Osanami Törngren, 2022b;Trondman, 2006). Scholars inquiring the idea of Swedishness qualitatively also argue how racial Whiteness is embedded in the idea of Swedishness throughout its history (Gokieli, 2017;Hübinette andLundström, 2014, 2020;Osanami Törngren, 2020, 2022b. A study on racially mixed Swedes clearly shows that while self-identification is flexible and the choice to identify as Swedish or mixed reflects their personal decision to connect with their national, cultural, and ethnic background, their claims to Swedishness is not always validated because of how they are racialized and racially categorized as non-White by others (Osanami Törngren, 2022a).…”
