In Situ Growing and Patterning of Aligned Organic Nanowire Arrays via Dip Coating

Abstract: Aligned organic nanowire arrays are grown in situ and patterned via dip coating. By optimizing the stick-slip motion, the solvent evaporation conditions, and the solution concentration, parallel organic nanowire arrays with tunable length and desirable density and periodicity are directly grown and aligned on the substrate. Organic FETs based on the organic nanowire array have been successfully fabricated with a mobility of 1 x 10(-4) cm(2) .V(-1).s(-1).

“…Among the templating methods, two prominent techniques are spin‐coating on top of a rubbed polyimide layer or drop‐casting on a nano‐grooved SiO 2 surface . Methods based on the application of macroscopic forces include dip‐coating and zone‐casting, which have been shown to induce high degrees of alignment for small molecules, rubbing the polymer film itself and solution‐shearing . While techniques employing only low shearing forces proved unsuccessful in aligning DPP‐BTz, we present here a newly developed shearing process based on a flexible, solution resistant lamella made of perfluoropolyether (PFPE).…”

“…Conjugated polymers show complex microstructure organizations in the solid state,1–7 as the supramolecular arrangement of the polymer chains depends sensitively not only on their primary chemical structure but also on the techniques used for their processing into thin films (spin versus dip coating,8–10 use of good versus bad solvent,11 thermal annealing,12, 13 surface treatment,14–16 etc.). In contrast to crystalline inorganic materials where long‐range order is present, organic conjugated polymers are soft materials and give rise to various bulk morphologies.…”

“…Precisely positioning and patterning of organic micro/nanocrystals in a large area is the prerequisite for their practical applications. To get high‐throughput controlled alignment and patterning of organic micro/nanocrystals from solution, various attempts, such as dip coating, zone casting, solution shearing deposition, spin coating, slot‐die coating, inkjet printing, and droplet‐pinned crystallizing were performed. These techniques could combine growth and patterning of organic micro/nanocrystals into one step and produce various patterned organic micro/nanocrystals.…”
