In Situ Photopolymerization of Methacrylic Acid at a Self-Assembled Xanthate Monolayer Surface on Gold. Formation of Poly(methacrylic acid) Brushes and Their Interaction with Cytochrome c

Abstract: Mixed monolayers of photoinitiatable xanthate-carrying, double-chained disulfide compound 1 and the corresponding xanthate-free compound 2 were spontaneously formed on a gold-coated quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Self-assembling processes of these mixtures could be monitored as a frequency shift of QCM, and the composition of the resultant monolayers was found to be comparable to that of feed in solutions (f 1, mole fraction of 1 in the mixture). Photopolymerizations of methacrylic acid in aqueous solution… Show more

“…In addition, a high concentration of radicals may induce the formation of a bulk polymer in the surroundings. [5,[27][28][29] The Au substrate covered with a printed pattern of mixed SAMs, consisting of parallel stripes with a 15 lm width separated by 5 lm Au, was immersed in a deoxygenated aqueous solution of the monomer NIPAM and subsequently irradiated with UV light. Figure 2 presents height images from tappingmode AFM measurements of the patterned surface with the grafted PNIPAM chains in the dry state.…”

“…16 Although surfacebound initiators, including SAMs, on glass, silica, and polymers have been explored frequently, 6,7,13 far fewer investigations have been reported for graft copolymerization on thiol-coated gold surfaces. [7][8][9][10] However, gold substrates are perfect transducers for various sensors, including surface plasmon resonance (SPR), which has gained great importance for the study of biomolecular interactions. 3,5,17 One concern is the relative thermal and chemical instability of SAMs on gold under polymerization reaction conditions.…”

“…Furthermore, special syntheses or derivatizations of thiol derivatives have been necessary. [7][8][9][10] Therefore, a simple and effective method for immobilizing an initiator on a thiol-coated gold surface along with mild reaction conditions for tailoring the surface structure and properties would have immediate relevance for fundamental and applied research.…”

“…The QCM measures change in mass based on a shift in resonance frequency of a vibrating quartz crystal and can detect small mass increase in real time with a resolution better than 1 ng 2. It has been widely used to monitor film deposition or molecule adsorption/absorption from the vapor or solution phases,3, 4 and to monitor film growth in electrochemical polymerization and plasma polymerization processes 5–8…”
