In Situ Preparation of Resol/Sepiolite Nanocomposites

Abstract: In this study, in situ modified phenol formaldehyde resins were prepared from clay (sepiolite) in the presence of base catalyst. Different clay contents (3 wt%, 5wt%, 8 wt%, 10 wt%, 15wt%, 20wt%, 30wt% and 50 wt%) were used to produce sepiolite modified resol nanocomposite resins (SEP-PFNCRs). SEP-PFNCRs were partially cured by heat and the effects of the curing process and the clay content in the resol resin were determined on the spectroscopic, thermal, and microscopic properties of the final products. The s… Show more

“…Phenolics or phenol‐formaldehyde resins are amongst the oldest thermosetting polymers, with excellent ablative properties, low smoke density, high chemical resistance, and thermal stability . Such resins have been used in a broad range of applications such as molding compounds, thermal insulation materials, coatings, laminates, wood products industry, and structural adhesives, and most of all as light weight foams in aerospace applications . Furthermore, phenolics are also utilized as a matrix material for composite applications in the sport and construction industries due to their capability of withstanding highly corrosive environments .…”

“…As the presence of the tunnels and Si‐OH, sepiolite can dispersed well in polymer matrix and thereby improve the mechanical properties, thermal stability, flame retardancy, and barrier properties of polymers . In our previous work, we synthesized in situ modified resol nanocomposites with different clay contents from 3 to 50 wt %. Considerable thermal stability enhancement of resol matrix has been found by incorporation of sepiolite due to the good dispersion and strong interfacial interaction between silanol groups of sepiolite and methylol groups of resol.…”

“…Balci and Lyim [10] prepared resol type phenolic resin nanocomposites blends by blending of bentonite and silica with resol resin and applied their films as surface coating. Alkan and Kizilcan [22] prepared resol/sepiolite nanocomposites via in situ polymerization of monomers. They also prepared alendronic acid modified resol nanocomposite resins and sepiolite modified reasol nanocomposite resin by in situ method in the presence of base catalyst with the objective of studying the synergistic effect of alendronic acid and sepiolite on resol resins.…”
