In situ reconstruction of septic aortic pseudoaneurysm due to Salmonella or Streptococcus microbial aortitis: long-term follow-up

Abstract: SAP due to Salmonella and streptococcal microbial aortitis can be successfully treated with resection of the aneurysm and extensive debridement, followed by in situ prosthetic graft interposition or patch repair aortoplasty. This is a safe and effective treatment that may result in complete remission of SAP. Postoperative parenteral antibiotic therapy should be continued for 2 to 8 weeks. Although usually recommended, lifelong suppressive antibiotic therapy appears to be nonessential with this approach.

“…A diseased aorta, such as that with significant atherosclerotic change or preexisting aneurysm, is more vulnerable to Salmonella species [11]. In the literatures from Taiwan and in our institutional experience, Salmonella species account for 50-83% of cases of infected aortic aneurysms [11,12,14,15].…”

“…Because of the high prevalence of Salmonella species infection in our country, we prefer administering ceftriaxone in every case of an infected aortic aneurysm if there is no contraindication [12,69,71]. Once the culture and susceptibility results are available, antibiotics should be tailored accordingly.…”
