In the jungle of time: the concept of identity as a way out

Abstract: What could be a unifying principle for the manifold of temporal experiences: the simultaneity or temporal order of events, the subjective present, the duration of experiences, or the impression of a continuity of time? Furthermore, we time travel to the past visiting in imagination previous experiences in episodic memory, and we also time travel to the future anticipating actions or plans. For such time traveling we divide time into three domains: past, present, and future. What could be an escape out of this … Show more

“…In the context of our reasoning, they appear to be necessary for complexity reduction of information, and they represent the neural basis for the creation of identity on the perceptual and cognitive level (Pöppel, 2010;Zhou et al, 2014). On different operative levels, temporally distributed information is automatically integrated or synchronized; pre-semantic processes provide temporal platforms for the creation of content.…”

“…This selfreference is an implicit process in the present, but it can be made explicit if, under conscious control, we time-travel to our own past as it is represented in episodic memory. That is to say, the episodic memory provides an efficient way by bringing the past into the time window that represents the "present" (Zhou et al, 2014) to synchronize the past and present "selves," thus giving rise to a coherent and subjectively continuous self-identity through the lifespan. On that basis, it follows that the tragedy of a memory loss is mainly the loss of a potential and necessary self-reference .…”

“…This is done, because the homeostatic state may be violated by unexpected changes in the future. It means as well that every organism implies a kind of self identity over time [29]. This identity requires a time interval of finite duration within which sensory information is integrated.…”

“…In it is suggested that in humans a temporal window with the duration of 3 s is created [15]. This window represents the psychological concept of "now" [29]. The consciousness concept of "now" represented by the temporal window is shifted backward in time of the consciousness itself, since a subconsciousness mechanism is required to preform the integration task.…”
