In vitro activity of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) on myometrium contractility

Abstract: LH/hCG receptor has been found in extragonadal tissues in human and animals. The myometrium presents such receptors but their functional role is still not clear. Aim of our study was to test the activity of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) on bovine uterine contractility. Uterine strips from cows both during follicular and luteal phases were mounted in an organ bath and then exposed to increased doses of hCG. The amplitude of the myometrium contractions were significantly decreased in the follicular and lute… Show more

“…Rao and colleagues showed the capability of hCG to inhibit prostaglandin-induced preterm delivery in a murine model [87]. Recent physiological evidence has shown a dose dependent decrease in myometrial contractility with increasing doses of hCG [88]. However clinical trials have not yet been able to demonstrate any significant decrease in miscarriage rates upon hCG administration and many of these postulated functions remain to be independently validated in appropriate and well-designed clinical trials [8991].…”

“…Finally, it is interesting to point out that myometrial hCG/LH receptors are also present in animals and their activation results in an inhibition of contractions amplitude, just as in human myometrium. 41,42 Table 1 lists all the actions of hCG in myometrium.…”

“…Besides detrusor muscle, hCG can inhibit the contractions of myometrial smooth muscle and vascular smooth muscle in reproductive organs, which explains the minimal side effects. [45][46][47][48][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81] There are still many unanswered scientific questions with regard to hCG in OAB. Some of the answers come from clinical trials and others from continued hCG research on bladder.…”
