“…Carlis and co-workers assessed cubebin, its oxidation product hinokinin, and dihydrocubebin for their in vitro anthelmintic activity against gastrointestinal nematodes using the egg hatch test, larval development test and L3 migration inhibition test. 57 These compounds showed ovicidal activity with EC 50 values of 150.00 μg mL −1 , 186.70 μg mL −1 and 68.38 μg mL −1 , respectively. In larval development test, cubebin showed an EC 50 value of 14.89 μg mL −1 , and an EC 50 value of 30.75 μg mL −1 for hinokinin.…”

“…The hexane partition HF1 that consisted mainly of lignans, although inactive against C. elegans, T. canis and A. caninum, was active against A. suum and T. suis larvae. Some lignans have been suggested to have nematocidal and ovicidal properties 25 . This observation suggests that the weakly anthelmintic lignans may have a contributory effect to the overall anthelmintic action of P. urinaria extracts.…”

“…Furthermore, it is known that praziquantel also causes morphological changes in the tegument of schistosomes 42 , 53 . Studies on anthelmintic activity of other lignans were described by de Paula Carlis and colleagues 54 , in a study which evaluated the effects of the hinokinin, cubebin, and dihydrocubebin isolated from Piper cubeta fruits, against eggs and third stage larvae of sheep gastrointestinal nematodes ( Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus sp). The authors reported that lignans caused serious lesions on the surface of parasites that led to death.…”
