In vitro antifungal activity of the tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) essential oil and its major components against plant pathogens

Abstract: Aims:  The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil (TTO) and its principal components on four cereal‐pathogenic fungi. Methods and Results:  The antimycotic properties of TTO and of terpinen‐4‐ol, γ‐terpinen and 1,8‐cineole (eucalyptol) were evaluated in vitro on Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium culmorum and Pyrenophora graminea. Moreover, barley leaves infected with Blumeria graminis were treated with whole TTO. All the tested fungi were susceptible to TTO and its com… Show more

“…The main component of A. zerumbet was 1,8-cineol, which has previously been shown to have antibacterial activity (CHA et al, 2007), antifungal activity (TERZI et al, 2007) and activity against the nematode Anisakis simplex (NAVARRO et al, 2008). The main component of L. camara was caryophyllene oxide, an antifungal agent (YANG et al, 1999) that has analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity (CHAVAN et al, 2010).…”

“…This oil is largely employed for its antimicrobial properties due to the compound terpinen-4-ol. It is incorporated as the active ingredient in many topical formulations used to treat infections (Carson et al, 2006) and as alternative natural fungicide (Terzi et al, 2007). Niaouli oil is extracted from M. viridiflora (also known as Melaleuca quinquenervia).…”

“…T-4-ol ve α-terpineol bu bağlamda en etkin iki kimyevi içerik olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. 57 Aynı zamanda T-4-ol ve α-terpineol'un yapısındaki hidroksil grupları orta derecede suda çözünebilir olma özelliği kazandır-maktadır. Böylece bu maddeler su ile hücreye girer, hücre membranının stabilizasyonunu bozmaktadır ve olay akışı osmotik şok ile sonuçlanmaktadır.…”
