In-vitro antioxidant and oxidant properties of Centaurea rigida

Abstract: Many different natural materials are used in complementary medicine. Among natural products, herbal materials are used quite a lot. Centaurea rigida Willd. was used as material in this study. The antioxidant and oxidant potential of the plant was determined. The aerial parts of the plant sample were extracted with ethanol in a soxhlet device. Antioxidant and oxidant potentials were measured with Rel Assay kits. As a result of the studies, the total antioxidant value of the plant was determined as 3.522±0.166, … Show more

“…The action of eating and drinking provides our body with the elements necessary for maintenance of life and health, Food will be varied, sufficient, adapted to the needs of each individual, in correlation with his activity (Akgul et al, 2020;Kına et al, 2021). From food, the body makes raw material that will play the role of structural materials and energy source of our organization (Sevindik et al, 2017;Uysal et al, 2021).…”

“…The role of free radicals in many disease conditions has been well established. Several biochemical reactions in our body generate reactive oxygen species and these are capable of damaging crucial bio-molecules (Kına et al, 2021). If they are not effectively scavenged by cellular constituents, they lead to disease conditions (Halliwell et al 1995).…”

“…Fruits and vegetables are rich in functional components such as minerals and bioactive phytochemicals. Increased intake of fresh fruits and vegetables is linked to a lower risk of contracting major degenerative diseases such as cancer, cataracts, diabetes, Alzheimer and Parkinson disease (Ilahy et al, 2011;Tlili et al, 2011;Liu., 2013;Tomé-Carneiro and Visioli., 2016;Sevindik et al, 2017;Kına et al, 2021;Uysal et al, 2021). Watermelon is now widely regarded as a "functional food" and popular fruit that contains key nutritional and bioactive elements that provide a variety of health advantages.…”
