In vitro biological screening of a critically endangered medicinal plant, Atropa acuminata Royle Ex Lindl of north western Himalaya

Abstract: Atropa acuminata Royle Ex Lindl (Atropa acuminata) under tremendous threat of extinction in its natural habitat. However, the antimicrobial, antileishmanial and anticancer effects of the plant’s extracts have not been reported yet. In the current study, an attempt has been made to evaluate the pharmacological potential of this plant’s extracts against microbes, Leishmania and cancer. The roots, stems and leaves of Atropa acuminata were ground; then, seven different solvents were used alone and in different rat… Show more

“…One gram cysts were initially hydrated in freshwater for one hour in a separating funnel or cone shaped container. Seawater was prepared by dissolving 17 g of sea salt in 500 mL of distilled water [38,39]. The cone was facilitated with good aeration for 48 h at room temperature and under continuous illumination.…”

“…Another research was conducted on the extract and fractions of Atropa acuminate, and ethyl acetate have shown anti-leishmanial effect (36). Study of the effect of methanol and chloroform extracts of Valeriana wallichii root showed positive activities against L. donovani and L. major promastigote and amastigote, while in the current study, the chloroform fraction of J. excelsa extract showed anti-L. major amastigotes activity (37).…”

“…After concentrating the filtrate, the extract was stored at a low temperature (5˚C) for further experiments. Atropa acuminata plant root extract lug numerous important phytochemical components that were qualitatively assessed in accordance with the literature review [35].
