In Vitro Comparison of Shaping Abilities of ProTaper and GT Rotary Files

Abstract: This study analyzed the abilities of ProTaper and GT Rotary files to shape the curved canals of extracted mandibular molars. Twenty mesial canals with curvatures ranging from 23 to 54 degrees (Weine analysis) were radiographically selected from a group of 58 molars. The specimens, divided into two groups, were instrumented using the two systems according to the manufacturer's guidelines. Using a radiographic platform and a contrast medium, reproducible preinstrumentation and postinstrumentation radiographs wer… Show more

“…FlexMaster (VDW Antaeos, Munich, Germany) and ProTaper instruments (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) performed well in recent studies with regard to shaping ability (11)(12)(13). A new kind of rotary instruments, RaCe reamer with alternating cutting edges (FKG Dentaire, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland), was recently introduced into the market.…”

“…Different methodologies have been reported during evaluation of remaining filling material including longitudinal cleavage of teeth which may displace filling material remnants, association of longitudinal and transverse cleavage, cleavage and photographic recordings, visual examination through cleavage and photography in association with radiographic examination [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]18]. The problems with sectioning teeth are that it can disturb the remaining filling material.…”

“…Literature review reveals several studies on the effectiveness of rotary and hand instruments, either simulated resin canals or extracted teeth with curved canals [7][8][9][10][11][12]. The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of two rotary retreatment Vol 2,No 4 canal.…”

“…Because of the small diameter and taper at the apical part of these instruments, the shaping files have high flexibility. They can flare the coronal part of the canal with maintenance of the curvature (9,10). On the other hand, the finishing files have greater taper at the apical part of the instrument (F1, 7%; F2, 8%; F3, 9%), leading to an increasing rigidity or stiffness (11,12).…”
