In Vitro Drug Release and Biocatalysis from pH-Responsive Gold Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Doxycycline

Abstract: pH-sensitive doxycycline gold nanoparticles (doxy-AuNPs) are reported here to act as effective drug nanocarriers and as biocatalysts. The AuNPs were synthesized with doxy as the reducing and capping agent. Various parameters were optimized to find the best conditions for the synthesis of doxy-AuNPs, and these were characterized with UV−vis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Doxy-AuNPs were then loaded with the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX), where 70% of the initiall… Show more

“…Nanobiotechnology is among the demanding areas of research that make use of biological substances at nanoscale and find applications for them in different fields, such as biosensors [10], diagnostics [11], bio-imaging [12], catalysis [13], drug delivery systems [14], and nanomedicine [15]. In comparison to conventional drug formulations, nanomedicine has received more attention in the last few years due to its benefits, such as more precise diagnosis, a higher percentage of recovery, and more effective therapies [16].…”

“…Otherwise, it is reported that cancer-specific conditions such as acidic pH and higher levels of glutathione, heat, or light can be used to trigger the release of the drug from the nanocarrier [36]. These parameters act as stimuli for the smart release of the drug [36,37]. However, power evidences are needed to further clarify whether "BSO is released from BSO@HAuNS."…”
