In Vitro Fermentation of Different Indigestible Glucans with Varying Physico-Chemical Properties by Human Fecal Microbiota

Abstract: Indigestible glucans (IGs) are dietary fibers that can promote human health via fermentation by the gut microbiota, where their physico-chemical properties play a crucial role. This effect remains to be fully explored. The aim of the current study was to comprehensively investigate and compare the fermentation characteristics of IGs with various structural properties, as well as their effects on the gut microbiota. Barley β-glucan (BG), laminarin (L), yeast β-glucan (BY), pachyman (PAC), resistant starch (R), … Show more

“…β-glucans differ in gut microbiota regulation capacity, such as the abundance of total bacteria, Bifidobacterium spp., and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii , but each one can have specific applications in promoting human health. 86 After dietary intervention with barley β-glucan, changes in the gut microbiota composition related to the increase of healthy bacteria ( Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia ) were observed in patients at high risk of developing metabolic syndrome. 87 Furthermore, in patients suffering from chronic kidney disease, intake of β-glucan (about 13.5 g per day) significantly altered the uremic toxin levels of intestinal origin and favorably affected the gut microbiome.…”
