In Vitro Susceptibility of 50 Non-β-Lactamase-Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae Strains to 12 Antimicrobial Agents

Abstract: The in vitro activities of six commonly used antibiotics and six newer β-lactam agents were determined in 50 consecutive clinical isolates of β-lactamase-negative Neisseria gonorrhoeae . The gonococci isolated were notably resistant to penicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, and tetracycline, whereas all of the strains were susceptible to the newer β-lactam agents cefoxitin and spectinomycin.

“…In contrast, S. faecalisis resistant, as are some viridans streptococcal specie^.^ All Neisseria gonorrhoeae and H. influenzae, both beta-lactamase-positive and -negative isolates, are inhibited by <0.03-0.3 pg/m1. [12][13][14] Strains of N. meningitidis are inhibited by 50.1 pg/ml.15 S. aureus haas ceftizoxime MIC values in the range of 3 to 8 pglml, and as with other cephalosporins, methicillin-resistant S. aureus and S. epidermidis are re~istant.~-'O The MI C, for the majority of gram-negative bacilli is <1 pg/ml, with the exception of selected strains of Enterobacfer aerogenes, €. cloacae and Citrobacter fre~ndii.~.…”

“…The cell suspension and inoculation of antibiotic containing plates were done as previously described in the literature." 18 The MICs were determined as the lowest concentra-tion permitting the growth on no more than one colony. Penicillin susceptible Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates were defined as those having a MIC of < 0.06 pg/ml; intermediately penicillin resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae had MICs in the range 0.06 pg/ml to 1 0 ig/ml; and penicillin resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae were those with MICs > 1.0 pg/ml.…”

“…Several comparative assays of antimicrobial activity against both PPNG and non-PPNG strains have been published recently (2,3,(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22). These comparisons have varied somewhat in methods, strains, and results.…”
