In vivo acquisition of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase inSalmonella enteritidis during antimicrobial therapy

Abstract: The recovery of a Salmonella enteritidis strain that acquired resistance to beta-lactams (including cefotaxime), to aminoglycosides and to chloramphenicol subsequent to cefotaxime therapy is reported. This resistance pattern to beta-lactams was due to the presence of an extended-spectrum beta-lactamase. The isoelectric point of this extended-spectrum beta-lactamase was 6.3. The resistance genes were located on a transferable high-molecular-weight plasmid.

“…Few authors detected them in various serotypes of S. enterica (8,18,22,23), and all reported the presence of SHV-2. Several different TEM ESBLs have been found in this genus (4,5,36,49,57). In this paper, two isolates carrying SHV-2a of S. enterica serotype wien, originally from Libyan patients, are reported.…”

“…However, it has been reported that 36.1% of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates collected in a single South African hospital in 1998 and 1999 were ESBL producers (33). ESBLs have also been documented in Israel, Saudi Arabia, and a variety of North African countries (3,25,35,36,47,122,247,272). Outbreaks of Klebsiella infections with strains resistant to third-generation cephalosporins have been reported in Nigeria and Kenya without documentation of ESBL production (5,264).…”

“…The sequential in vivo acquisition of ESBLs by S. enteritidis was first reported by Barguellil in Tunisia. The genes conferring resistance to β‐lactams, aminoglycosides and chloramphenicol were transferred together by conjugation [43].…”
