In vivo study of dermal collagen of striae distensae by confocal Raman spectroscopy

Abstract: This research work mainly deals with studying qualitatively the changes in the dermal collagen of two forms of striae distensae (SD) namely striae rubrae (SR) and striae albae (SA) when compared to normal skin (NS) using confocal Raman spectroscopy. The methodology includes an in vivo human skin study for the comparison of confocal Raman spectra of dermis region of SR, SA, and NS by supervised multivariate analysis using partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) to determine qualitatively the change… Show more

“…Rough skin surface and less elasticity are related to dermal density, such as in fibrillin, elastin, and collagens. Dermal fiber networks of SD are modified with a decrease in the elastic fibers in the papillary dermis, and collagen networks are also modified and reduced in SD skin . We identified the reduced echo‐density in the dermis of SD skin in Figure G,H, and Figure showed a decreased echo‐density in the dermis of SD skin.…”

“…Dermal fiber networks of SD are modified with a decrease in the elastic fibers in the papillary dermis, and collagen networks are also modified and reduced in SD skin. [20][21][22] We identified the reduced echo-density in the dermis of SD skin in Figure 2G,H, and Figure 4 showed a decreased echo-density in the dermis of SD skin. The SD skin had the higher collagen degeneration and lower structures of collagen and elastic fibers than adjacent normal skin.…”

“…From the 200 spectra of the five groups obtained, the intensity of characteristic peaks of dyes and fibres was acquired. Baselines of the spectra were normalised against the fibre peaks at 1095 cm −1 ( I Dyes /I Fibres ; I Dyes represents the Raman intensity of the dye peak at 1577 cm −1 and I Fibres represents the Raman intensity of the fibre peak at 1095 cm −1 ), 30,52 to avoid the influence of intensity attenuation on the scattering signal when the laser beam irradiated to the inner fibre.…”

“…Thus, seeking to acquire more effective products with claims in stimulating endogenous HA production, confocal Raman spectroscopy (CRS), a technique with high capacity to biochemically characterize biological tissues quickly and accurately, has been used in various evaluations. Furthermore, the fact that CRS does not require invasive procedures or treatment makes it an important tool for measuring the effects of cosmetic products [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22] .…”
