In vivo visualization of endolyphatic hydrops in patients with Meniere’s disease: correlation with audiovestibular function

Abstract: Our objective is to determine whether the degree of endolymphatic hydrops as it is detected in vivo in patients with definite Meniere's disease correlates with audiovestibular function. In this prospective study, 37 patients with definite Meniere's disease according to AAO-HNS criteria were included. Intratympanic contrast enhanced temporal bone MRI was performed using a 3D FLAIR protocol. The degree of endolymphatic hydrops in the cochlea and the vestibulum was graded on a Likert scale (0-3). The degree of hy… Show more

“…The clinical signiˆcance of MR imaging evaluation of endolymphatic hydrops has been reported mostly by intratympanic injection of GBCM, [7][8][9] and a scale for grading endolymphatic hydrops was proposed using 3D-FLAIR and 3D-inversion recovery with phase-sensitive reconstruction (3D-real IR) images obtained after intratympanic injection of GBCM. 4 Grading has also been applied to images obtained after double-and single-dose IV-GBCM.…”

“…Although the clinical signiˆcance of MR imaging evaluation of endolymphatic hydrops is reported, [4][5][6] the IT administration of GBCM requires a slightly invasive puncture of the tympanic membrane, is oŠ-label use, and requires 24 hours of waiting time. Thus, the development of a method for detecting endolymphatic hydrops by intravenous (IV) injection of GBCM was explored for wider application in the clinicalˆeld.…”

“…1 Researchers from multiple institutions have reported some correlation of endolymphatic hydrops visualized on MR images and clinical tests, [2][3][4] but one report failed to show signiˆcant correlation between endolymphatic hydrops and caloric test. 5 Thus, correlation between endolymphatic hydrops and clinical ndings remains under investigation.…”
