“…First of all, no correlation between the dose-dependent inhibition of lymphocyte transformation by different crude hormone batches and their gonadotropic activity could be found. The separation of the inhibitory activity in a fraction with a very small hormonal activity which is probably not significant, as well as the enrichment of the hormone in a second fraction of the same purification step, provide further support for our earlier findingsf 13 1. Choriogoftadotropin which had been purified in 3 steps inhibits lymphocyte transformation beyond a dose of 5000 IU/m/.…”

“…It is possible that hCG stimulates P4 production by tropho blasts. Some investigators have envisioned a role for hCG in immunologic protection of the trophoblast (173); others have suggested this activity is due to a contaminant in hCG preparations (72,102). Because of the biological and immunological similarity between hCG and LH, it was difficult previ ously to distinguish between these two gonadotropins.…”

“…It has been reported that human pregnancy serum inhibits mitogen-stimulated lymphocyte proliferation (Walker et al, 1972;Jones et al, 1973;Figueredo et al, 1979). Crude human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) preparations had similar effect (Adcock et al, 1973), while highly purified hCG did not influence the lymphocyte response to mitogens, suggesting that the lymphocyte suppression observed was due to additional unidentified substances present in the crude hormone preparations (Caldwell et al, 1975;Gundert et al, 1975). Alpha-fetoprotein was found to effectively suppress T-cell mediated reactions but not B-cell responses in vitro (Murgita et al, 1978).…”
