Incidence and Characteristics of Thyroid Dysfunction Following Interferon Therapy in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C.

Abstract: Thyroid functions were analyzed before, during and after interferon (IFN) therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis C. According to the results of routine thyroid function tests and measurements of the levels of anti-thyroid autoantibody prior to the therapy, patients were divided into 2 groups; Group A (19 patients) had at least one abnormal finding related to the thyroid, and Group B (40 patients) did not show any abnormality. Five patients (26% ) in Group A and 4 (10%) in Group B showed thyroid dysfunction… Show more

Acute administration has been used as a model of illness because the effects are similar: interferon-α leads to a decrease in T3, an increase in rT3, and a decrease in TSH.…”

“…The incidence is much greater in females and in patients with positive TPO antibodies before the initiation of therapy. 333,335,336 During therapy, patients who were antibody positive can have a rise in titer, whereas antibody positivity can develop in patients with previously negative antibodies. In patients who are treated with interferon, the incidence of thyroid disease is much higher in those with hepatitis C than in those with hepatitis B. Thyrotoxicosis often occurs as a manifestation of a destructive thyroiditis.…”

“…Smatra se da postoji genetska predispozicija za upalni odgovor tiroidee tokom infekcije različitim virusima [10]. Opisani su i slučajevi subakutnog tiroidita kod pacijenata lečenih imunomodulatornim terapijama (interleukin 2, TNF, α i γ interferon) [11], kao i kod pacijenata nakon primene kontrastnih sredstava za radiološka ispitivanja [12]. SAT je redak kod dece [13].…”
