Incidence and distribution of pulp stones among Southern Saudi Arabian sub-population

Abstract: Purpose: To assess the incidence of pulp stones in molar and premolar teeth of Southern Saudi Arabian adult sub-population. Materials and Methods: Six hundred patient files were randomly selected from the database (records) of the College of Dentistry outpatient department screened by Oral Medicine and Radiology division. “…In this study, the incidence of pulp stones before orthodontic treatment initiation was 17%. The prevalence of pulp stones has been reported to be dissimilar among various nations due to ethnic variation [24]; however, another study in Iran asserted that 46.9% of patients had a tooth or teeth with pulp stones [18]. They used bite-wing and periapical radiographs as their observation means; however, we used panoramic radiographs, as they are more common in orthodontic treatments, and we were able to analyze both jaws simultaneously.…”

“…But, the etiology of pulp stones is not clear. Pulp irritations such as long-term mastication forces, occlusal trauma, bruxism, periodontal pathology, orthodontic forces, and chronic pulp inflammation can be accounted for in the etiology (35). According to a systematic review, the frequency of pulp stones is about 36.5% (36), however its frequency in the Turkish population was found to be 7.4%.…”
