Incidence and Surgery Rate of Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Nationwide Database Study

Abstract: Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common cause of three-dimensional deformities of the spine. Most of the previous studies have been cross-sectional studies to estimate the prevalence in the general population. An age-matched, population-based study is performed using nationwide databases between 2011 and 2015. The incidence rates of idiopathic scoliosis by age group, sex, and region are identified. We also investigate the pattern of medical institution use and the surgery rate of patients with idiopathic scoli… Show more

“…The median age for the whole group was 10 years and 8 months, the girls' group was 11 years and 4 months and for the boys' group was 9 years and 6 months. Most of them, 31 in absolute numbers, in percentage 70,45% were between 9 and 13 years old, which is the average age for adolescence (7). The group that was mostly represented was that of the 12 years old, 15 in absolute numbers, percentage 29,55%.…”

“…The mean age at diagnosis of scoliosis in 22q11.2DS patients was 11.6 ± 4.2, and 92 (49.7%) were female ( Figure 3 ). In literature, the mean age at idiopathic scoliosis diagnosis in the general population varies due to different screening and diagnosis protocols but is reported 9.5–13.6 [ 26 , 27 , 28 ]. Furthermore, the ratio of females to males in idiopathic scoliosis is reported as 1.44 to 1, corresponding to 59% females [ 26 ].…”

“…The mean age at diagnosis of scoliosis in patients with 22q11.2DS was 11.6, and 49.7% were females. In idiopathic scoliosis, this is reported as 9.5–13.6 years old and 59% females [ 26 , 27 , 28 ]. This broad range of reported age at diagnosis is caused by the many different scoliosis screening protocols in different countries.…”

“…Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a complex spinal deformity that can lead to serious deterioration of quality of life and functional impairment. Its prevalence has been often documented as up to 5% ( Konieczny et al, 2013 ; Yılmaz et al, 2020 ; Thomas et al, 2021 ), but recent work points to a prevalence of even 12% ( Sung et al, 2021 ).…”
