“…In Khon Kaen in Thailand, 89% of histologically confirmed cases of liver cancer are ICC, and almost all ICC cases are related to O. viverrini infection 36,38. In a C. sinensis endemic area in Korea, there is also a high incidence of liver cancer, with truncated incidence rates (35‐ to 64‐year age group) of 74.8/105 in males and 15.6/105 in females 39. ICC accounted for more than 20% of liver cancers in Pusan, Korea 40…”

“…59 The age-adjusted incidence of thyroid cancer in 1986 was 3.9 in females and 0.8 in males per 100 000 people per year. 60 According to the data from the Korean National Cancer Registry, the ageadjusted incidence of thyroid cancer in 2007 was 64.8 in females and 11.6 in males per 100 000 people per year. 59 This dramatic increase in thyroid cancer incidence during the past 20 years appears to result from the improved diagnosis of small cancers due to the increased use of ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsies in South Korea.…”

“…Bile duct cancer is more prevalent in Asian countries than in the United States and Europe. For example, there is a high prevalence of intrahepatic bile duct cancer in areas such as Thailand (96/100 000 in men and 38/100 000 in women) [1] and South Korea (75/100 000 in men and 16/100 000 in women) [24] , whereas its prevalence in the United States is low with only 1-2/100 000 [25] . The geographic differences in the prevalence of bile duct cancer may be attributed to various distributions of local risk factors for bile duct cancer such as hepatolithiasis or liver-fluke infestation.…”
