Incidence of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors in the United States from 2001-2015: A United States Cancer Statistics Analysis of 50 States

Abstract: Introduction Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) was once a mislabeled cancer with inaccurate incidence data in the United States (US). Since the discovery of a gain of function mutation in kit, the proper identification of GIST has greatly improved. Given this inaccuracy in prior GIST incidence, our goal in this study was to evaluate the true incidence of GIST in at-risk populations in all 50 states. Methods The United States Cancer Statistics (USCS) was used to obtain data … Show more

“…De manera similar, una tasa mitótica de < 5 mitosis por 50 campos de alto poder (CAP) presagia un bajo riesgo de metástasis, mientras que las tasas mitóticas > 5 por 50 CAP y particularmente aquellas > 10 por 50 CAP predicen un mayor riesgo de enfermedad metastásica. Estos 2 factores son predictores independientes, pero mutuamente influyentes y se combinan en las directrices de los NIH (14).…”

“…GIST is the most common mesenchymal neoplasm of the upper gastrointestinal tract; in the United States, it has an incidence of 0.45 per 100 000 in the stomach and 0.209 per 100 000 in the small intestine. 88 Low-risk GISTs can be adequately treated with surgical excision, while adjuvant therapy is necessary for high-risk GISTs. The likelihood of progressive disease is estimated based on a tumour's location, size and microscopic mitotic rate.…”

“…The overall incidence of GISTs in the 50 states of the United States from 2001 to 2015 was 0.70 per 100,000 population per year, with a slight upward trend noted annually . In China, the National Office for Cancer Prevention and Research is responsible for collecting cancer registration data from across the country and publishing the annual incidence of different cancers.…”
