INCIDENCE OF LISTERIA MONOCYTOGENES IN RETAIL CHICKEN MEAT AND ESTABLISHING RELATIONSHIP WITH SOME BACTERIA BY LOGISTIC REGRESSION

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the contamination of retail poultry meat in Erzurum (Turkey) by Listeria monocytogenes and to evaluate its relationship with indicator bacteria using logistic regression. The incidence of L. monocytogenes was 32.76%, found in 38 of 116 samples. The application of logistic regression showed Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas spp. and Brochothrix thermosphacta populations have positive, and yeast and mold population have negative relationship with L. monocytogenes presen… Show more

“…Our results were in agreement with Elmali et al [ 52 ], who found a 37.5% prevalence of L. monocytogenes in 120 retail poultry meat samples. Additionally, Ceylan et al [ 53 ] reported similar results and found that 32.76% prevalence of L. monocytogenes was found in 38 of 116 analyzed samples. Escudero-Gilete et al [ 54 ] reported 26% prevalence in the retailed chicken meat samples.…”

“…This study suggests that poultry may be contaminated due to poor processing techniques, along with other factors such as temperature and water activity (Elmali et al, 2015). Raw poultry is a favorable environment for L. monocytogenes, and once it contaminates the meat in the processing environment, there is a high chance it will survive through to the retail environment and ultimately to the consumer (Ceylan et al, 2008). This is why it is critical that the proper processing techniques as stated earlier are followed explicitly.…”
