Incidence of viral respiratory pathogens causing exacerbations in adult cystic fibrosis patients

Abstract: Respiratory infections caused by respiratory viruses are common in paediatric cystic fibrosis (CF) patients and are associated with increased morbidity. There is only little data on the incidence of viral respiratory pathogens causing exacerbations in the adult CF patient population. In this observational pilot study we show, by using molecular as well as conventional techniques for viral isolation, that during 1 y a viral pathogen could be isolated in 8/24 (33%) adult CF patients who presented with a pulmonar… Show more

“…In adults and children with CF, viral infections can trigger pulmonary exacerbations, [269][270][271][272] particularly influenza virus 271,273 and rhinovirus. 269,270 Exacerbations in which a virus is identified are associated with worse clinical severity compared with viral exacerbations.…”

“…Only a few Cap sequences of picobirnaviruses are available; these sequences show <25% amino acid identity to each other, and a clear genogroup division cannot be distinguished (Figure 1, panel C). A picobirnavirus VS6600008-specific real time PCR was performed on the total sample set with primers VS791 (5′-CGATGGATCTTTATGTTCCCG-3′), VS792 (5′-GTAGTTGAAATGTTGATCCATTT-3′), and VS793 (5′-CAAACTTTCCAGCAACCGCTT-3′) labeled with 6-carboxy-fluorescein and 6-carboxy-tetramethyl-rhodamine as described ( 10 ). Only the sample from patient VS6600008 had a positive result (cycle threshold 25.1).…”
