Incidences of mortality of Indian peafowl Pavo cristatus due to pesticide poisoning in India and accumulation pattern of chlorinated pesticides in tissues of the same species collected from Ahmedabad and Coimbatore

Abstract: Incidences of mortality of Indian peafowl Pavo cristatus, the national bird (Schedule I Indian Wild Life Protection Act 1972), are rampant in India. Between January 2011 and March 2017, around 550 peafowl in 35 incidences were reported dead across the country. Due to the non-availability of fresh carcases, poisoning could not be confirmed. Birds which died due to kite string injuries in Ahmedabad (15) and accidents in Coimbatore (5) were tested for residues of chlorinated pesticides, namely hexachlorocyclohexa… Show more

“…In developing world, China adopted Codex MRLs as organized by the National Pesticide Residues Committee under the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) (Han et al, 2018;Yang et al 2018;Buijs et al, 2018). India pesticides are regulated under the Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee, while the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India sets the MRLs of registered pesticides (Nambirajan et al, 2018;Zikankuba et al 2019). In the case of Africa, some countries do not have pesticides registry just like some of the countries in the Southern Asia (Handford et al, 2015).…”

“…Bird mortalities may also occur due to feeding on seeds treated with insecticides or other pesticides. This phenomenon has been observed around the world [22], from the USA [155] to India [156] and Korea [157]. These risks have been widely understood by the public since Rachel Carson's 1962 book "Silent Spring" [158] but continue to the present day, and there is still concern that toxicity knowledge is incomplete for modern poisons such as glyphosate [159].…”
