Incipient motion of surf zone sediments

Abstract: Incipient motion experiments were conducted with natural gravel, acetate beads, and coarsegravel-sized electronic grains called Smart Sediment Grains in a Small-Oscillatory Flow Tunnel. Measurements of fluid velocity were made using Particle Image Velocimetry. The strength of the fluid shear stresses and the pressure gradients were examined for a range of oscillatory flow conditions at the onset of motion of the sediment particles to determine which mechanism had induced particle motion. The three sediment typ… Show more

“…[] suggested that equation presents a better analytical framework for incipient motion than the individually defined critical limits for plug flow and sheet flow. Simplified versions of (18) have since been proposed [e.g., Foster et al ., ; Frank et al ., ; Cheng et al ., ] by rearranging the equation to develop functions in terms of θ and S and approximating for p/z with Darcy's law and calibrated coefficients. “…Frank et al . [] assumed hb= d50 for incipient motion to obtain a simplified mobilizing parameter: Y= S+θ where S is the Sleath parameter from (6) calculated with the local acceleration approximation discussed earlier and θ is calculated using (7) with a wave friction factor calculated using ks=2.5d50 rather than a sheet flow thickness. Y at the initiation of erosion resulted in a range Yf = 0.09–0.20 (provided in Table ), similar to the reported range of 0.08–0.22 in Frank et al .…”
